ARISE is a European research project dedicated to improving how we understand and respond to accidental ammonia releases at sea.
Ammonia is increasingly seen as a key fuel for the energy transition, but its risks for people and the environment remain poorly understood.
Today, models used to predict the behaviour of an ammonia spill give very different results, making it difficult for authorities and industries to rely on them in case of an accident. ARISE was created to change this.
The project brings together leading scientists, maritime experts, and industry stakeholders to design and carry out the world’s first large-scale controlled releases of ammonia into seawater. These unique experiments provide real-world data that has never been collected before.
With this knowledge, ARISE compares, calibrates, and improves existing models, reducing uncertainties and making predictions more reliable. The ultimate goal is to develop guidance documents and best practices that can be used by regulators, responders, and the shipping industry worldwide.
The project also promotes knowledge-sharing, involving stakeholders through workshops and publications, and contributing to international discussions on maritime safety and environmental protection.
By turning scientific data into practical tools, ARISE helps ensure that the adoption of ammonia as a fuel is both safe and sustainable, protecting communities, responders, and marine ecosystems.
