P95 - SAFETIC
Safety of transport and installations using chemicals on the Atlantic coast of Africa
SAFETIC (Safe Transportation and Installations using Chemicals) is a European Union project under the CBRN Centres of Excellence Initiative. It addresses one of the most pressing challenges in Africa: preventing and responding to major accidents involving dangerous chemicals.
Chemicals are essential to economic development but also bring risks of fires, explosions, and toxic releases. The African Atlantic Façade is particularly vulnerable, with ports, industries, and transport corridors exposed to these threats.
Building on earlier projects (P41, INSTASUR, SECTRANS), SAFETIC completes the regional cycle by strengthening capacity-building in 10 countries: Benin, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Liberia, Mauritania, Morocco, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
The project helps partner countries to design prevention policies, strengthen risk assessments, and draft safety reports. It develops tools and training to assess the consequences of accidents, prepare emergency plans, and organise field exercises in real industrial sites.
Through workshops and technical assistance, SAFETIC empowers local experts to become leaders in risk prevention, safety inspection, and emergency preparedness.
A major ambition of the project is to establish a regional expertise network, ensuring that skills and knowledge remain available locally and can be mobilised across borders.
Expected results include regional frameworks, practical guides for safety reporting, and tested emergency plans. SAFETIC also delivers training sessions and simulations, building confidence and resilience at both national and regional level.
Ultimately, SAFETIC contributes to a safer environment for people, industries, and ecosystems in West and Central Africa, reinforcing regional cooperation and sustainability in chemical risk management.
